Read on to hear about how Elle Karel got started here in the harbor.
Elizabeth Karel McCreary is all about authentic self-expression. Drawing began as a college hobby for the North Carolina native, a way to heal and feel connected to something bigger than herself. People began asking for her sketches, and her talent and business blossomed. In 2012 McCreary opened an online shop to sell her illustrations, an ideal “storefront” for her business at that time. As an active-duty military family, McCreary and her husband Captain Morgan McCreary moved eight times in eight years and went through two deployments to Afghanistan. They moved to Gig Harbor in 2017 to raise their four-year-old son. Once settled, McCreary was able to open her brick and mortar studio gallery, Elle Karel, on Harborview Drive.
Elle Karel showcases McCreary’s original, hand-drawn illustrations which are modern, quirky, and find that perfect balance between realism and whimsy. Her works—many of which pay tribute to Gig Harbor and its wildlife—come in all forms: portraits, home goods, painted murals, apparel, enamel pins, stickers, giclee, postcards, and tattoo designs. The gallery also carries a selection of McCreary’s personal favorite art supplies, illustrated heirloom books, and handmade, biodegradable, do-it-yourself craft kits.
McCreary has been commissioned to do several custom projects for local businesses including logos and apparel design. Elle Karel is hoping to add some workshops and private lessons to the gallery’s calendar beginning in 2019, so stay tuned. And when you drop by, be sure to pick up one of McCreary’s original artwork stickers that benefits local charities and organizations like Harbor WildWatch.
