Let Gig Harbor’s top real estate agent, Paige Schulte, walk you through town and introduce you to the small business owners of Gig Harbor. Gig Harbor boasts a vibrant downtown scene lined with local business owners and non-profits, along with delicious eats from Uptown to Downtown Gig Harbor. Read on to hear about how Gig Harbor Canoe and Kayak got started here in the harbor and how much pride the city has for this special team.

Alan Anderson is a lifelong adventurer. He has mastered the art of kayaking, has hiked the Pacific Crest Trail, and has even won the Speed of Summit Adventure Race, which, at the time, was the largest adventure race in the world that involved kayaking, mountain climbing, hiking, and mountain lake swimming. In 1987 Anderson was traveling and kayaking in New Zealand when he decided that the best thing he could do with his life would be to start an adventure club for kids. Fifteen years later, Anderson made good on that dream when he opened the Gig Harbor Canoe & Kayak Racing Team in the winter of 2002.

Anderson founded the Gig Harbor Canoe & Kayak Racing Team to teach, support, and encourage youth, para-athletes, and adults in the sport of canoe and kayak sprint racing regionally, nationally, internationally, and ultimately at the Olympic level. In the 17 years that it has been open, the club has become a model organization for other clubs of its kind as well as an international powerhouse, with numerous athletes from the club going on to represent the USA at the Junior World Championships, Pan American Championships, and Olympic Hope Regattas at locations throughout Europe and the Americas. Not only has the club won six National Championships, but Anderson himself, who is the driving force, motivator, and inspirational instructor of the club, has won multiple awards for his coaching.

The club is currently run out of Skansie Park but is looking forward to moving to their new home at Ancich Park in the near future.

Gig Harbor Canoe & Kayak Racing Team is committed to the paracanoe program and has coached three athletes to the World Championships. The club also takes part in several community events and organizes the annual Gig Harbor Paddlers Cup, which is the premier event for Pacific Northwest canoe, paracanoe, kayak, paddleboard, and outrigger athletes and enthusiasts of all ages and levels.
